For most regions the best months are October to March, when days are sunny and dry. Ladakh is accessible only from June to September, and tiger sightings in Ranthambore peak from April to June. Our season guide has a region-by-region breakdown.

Hepatitis A, typhoid and an up-to-date tetanus booster are commonly recommended. Please consult a travel clinic 6 to 8 weeks before departure, as advice depends on your route and medical history. More in Health & Safety in India.

Yes. Travel insurance with medical cover is compulsory on all our tours. For Ladakh it must also cover high-altitude evacuation. We ask for your policy number before departure.

During the tour

All our tours are private. You travel only with the people you booked with, in your own vehicle, on the dates you choose. The only shared elements are jeep safaris in national parks, where a private jeep is available at extra cost.

By private air-conditioned car with a professional driver. On longer routes we use domestic flights or first-class train carriages where they save time. All drivers are employed by our partners, insured and speak conversational English.

Breakfast is always included; some tours include additional meals, listed on each tour page. India is one of the easiest countries in the world for vegetarians and vegans, and gluten-free or allergy-friendly meals can be arranged if you tell us in advance.

Safety and practicalities

Yes, with the same common sense you would use in any large country. Our guests travel with a vetted driver and licensed guides, stay in reputable hotels and have a 24/7 emergency number. Solo women travel with us every month; we choose hotels and guides with their comfort in mind.

No. Drink only sealed bottled or filtered water, which is provided in your vehicle every day. Avoid ice and raw salads outside good hotels and restaurants.

Hotels, transport, guides, entrance fees and breakfast are included, so most travellers spend $20 to $40 per person per day on lunches, dinners, drinks and tips. See Money & Budget in India.

Call the 24-hour number on your travel documents. Our operations team in India will rebook transport, change a hotel, arrange a doctor or contact your insurer. We resolve most issues within the hour.

Most asked

"Will it rain on my holiday?"

The monsoon is the question we hear most. The short answer: between October and March it almost never rains in the regions our tours visit. From June to September showers are heavy but brief, hotel prices fall and the countryside is at its greenest, while Ladakh stays dry all summer.
